In the PBC’s final Semester our focus is for the players to take each segment of practices, training, and games from the previous three semesters and now put the vital ingredients together for a full game experience. Being allowed to play any defense, including pressing from the onset of tipoff will be a true test for offensive players. Playing under duress, extending the floor, and having to find a way to get the basketball to areas on the floor that are critical for scoring, creating fouls and making the defense pay is a direct reflection of team strategy, but more a reflection of being able to translate the learned fundamental skills, technique and physical principles into live action in a full game setting.
Teams will have to share the ball, have good chemistry and ultimately learn how to execute together in order to have team success and measure overall improvement. Our focus at PBC is total team play and every player making a contribution. We understand each player will have different skillsets, but we also understand that if players are collectively learning the same fundamental skills, physical and mental approaches and being taught similar principles, then the collective team and each of its players within their role, will be able to shoot, rebound, make passes, play defense and be able to comprehend offensive and defensive strategy throughout the course of a whole game.
The PBC’s 4 Semester will have clearly helped each player define their role on a team, have a clear understanding of their teammate’s role and through several weekly evaluations have an understanding of what skill improvements that they will need to work on and create in order to become a better player and advance their skills. At the PBC Semester’s League we will use measurable stat and login sheets weekly to help our players learn how to play the game as well have a clear picture of their strengths, weaknesses and current skill needs. This way when players are assigned roles it will based upon fact and not favor. I have found as a coach that players are much less likely to complain or have negative attitudes when your able to show him or her tangible proof of shots made and missed, offensive rebounds and missed box outs, turnovers vs assist and missed and made free throw attempts.
Real numbers tell the truth of who the player is in terms of skill. When coaches treat players fairly and praise players for the things they do well and positively correct and criticize, kids and provide verbal and physical demonstrations for corrections, players usually respond well, have a much more positive attitude and are very welcoming to hearing any suggestions or instructions, feeling that you have their best interest at heart and that they feel supported. At the PBC we believe in Coach and Player ownership, accountability, development, team basketball, growth, wellness and fun in a great atmosphere where at all times the reinforcement is truthful and positive. Their will be mistakes, mishaps, struggles and letdowns, but here at the Semester’s League, these are opportunities, for coaches and players to grow together, leaning on the learned principles and turning perceived failures into successes.
When you treat players positively when there not performing well, they will learn to trust you, appreciate your approach, and work intensely toward improving the areas needed. As the Founder and Executive Director for the PBC, I’m looking forward to trying something different that will make a difference in the culture and landscape of youth basketball development. God Bless and we hope to see you soon.
