There are several ways to break a press, but the stress for players being harassed and hounded as a 1rst time experience can be overwhelming. During the PBC’s 3rdSemester Press Offense systems we will teach several fundamental alignments, spacing, angles, screening, parallel movements replace and recovering, as well the simplicity of getting the ball inbounds, avoiding areas of pressure and designated trap spots. We will also teach how to use contact to seal and go get the basketball, not being afraid when the trap comes and areas of release for passing outlets and rotation sequence while being pressured. Vision, passing, cutting and replacing are all key factors in breaking a press and making teams pay by creating easy scoring opportunities. You can attack the press with the dribble before the trap comes but our goal is to first show our kids who to beat the press with accurate passing, receiving and reversing the basketball.
Foot work, pivoting, jabbing, getting the shoulders down and keeping vision will be areas of emphasis. Using the whole floor and reversing the ball to the opposite side and using the middle of the floor as a friend in press recognition will help players overcome fear and anxiety as well utilizing our structure and already having been taught man to man defense the offensive players will be able to lesson turnovers, make better reads, and not be afraid of contact while recognizing the type of press the defense is in and adjusting the press alignment correctly. We will teach several press alignments including, 2 up, 4 Across. 3 High, Diamond and Spread.
We will teach our players the importance of changing tempo, surprising opponents, showing different forms of defenses as well the best times during games to apply pressure and shrink the court. We teach concept, player positioning, rotations, with detailed and easy to understand explanations of size versus speed, covering up at or down the line to defend passing lanes. Patience in trapping, recovering and replacing will be outlined within the goals of the press, as well designating the best trapping locations on the floor. We will teach defensive press counters needed to overcome the common offensive sets used to break press defenses.
The need to change and control tempo is always necessary to keep your opponent of guard. The ability to change from full court to half court press or a trapping half court defense will disrupt any opponent’s offensive rhythm if executed correctly and if they aren’t prepared. Our goals is to teach kids who to properly apply press defense as well translated, individual defense, into team defense extended 94ft. Teaching press offense against press defense allows for our players to learn how to slow teams down who want to get out in transition and play fast. By learning how to trap, it also teaches players how to speed teams up who are offensively efficient. Knowing what defense to play is irrelevant if you don’t teach players to understand tendencies and habits of teams they’ll play against.
This is again why the PBC Semester experience is unprecedented in our approach to creating smarter players and impacting results and outcomes.
